Here is what we got up to last week!
On Thursday, we spent some time in the afternoon in a circle
for Bella. We had a chance to go around the circle a few times and share our
favorite memories and well wishes as she moves forward in her journey to a few
school. We put those memories and wishes into a rock that she took with her so
she can always remember the nice things her classmates had to share.
We had our first story-telling time with Elder Randy. He
shared a wonderful story that had lessons around treating others how you want
to be treated, not judging someone based on the way they look and to remember
to always be kind.
We spent a few periods last week working on our character development
for our story-writing unit. We have been answering questions about our
protagonist to help us to get to know him/her better and to help us when it
comes time to adding detail to our writing.
In science, we have been working in lab groups to take part
in some rock and mineral testing. We have been working to identify things such
as color, luster, overall hardness of the rock or mineral, using a streak test
and to see whether the minerals were magnetic. We tested six different rocks and
six different minerals in our centers.
In math, we have been continuing to work with addition and subtraction
in word problems and we have been looking at ways to represent numbers up to
1000.
In social, we are in one of 4 small groups in our study of
one of the four global countries. Currently, we are researching our chosen
country on the computer and creating a Google Slide project that identifies
basic information on our country and to look at foods in that country.
We have also been talking about the UN Convention on the
Rights of the Child; including who is protected by those rights, why they are
important and looking at some of the various 54 articles outlining our rights.
We talked about how children who went to Residential School did not have the
protection of these rights and wondered how it would have looked different if
these rights were in place when those schools were opened. We also wondered
which countries had not signed on to the Convention and we were SUPER surprised
to learn that the US was one of two countries that had not signed on to protect
the children in their country.
We talked about the importance of writing and we
brainstormed some different ways we like to share our writing.
We worked with Ms. Bezugely on creating our Friendly Pinch
Pot Monsters on Monday and Tuesday. They look amazing and next week we will be
able to paint them before they go to the kiln J
