November 12th-16th

Highlights from our week!

With a partner, we read some stories to learn about different animal contributions during WW1 and WW2. We also looked at Indigenous contributions during the different wars and learned that many Indigenous people lost their status when the volunteered to fight for Canada. Additionally, we talked about Cree Code Talkers, including Charles “Checkers” Tomkins, and the importance of their role in helping the Allies win the war.

We had music three times! Ask me what I have been learning about in music.

We spent some time creating the templates for our story writing unit in our visual journals in order to organize our writing process. We have continued building on our character development for our story writing unit. After creating our protagonist and antagonist with a partner using tapigami, we sketched our characters in our visual journal and created a space to answer questions about our characters. We also spent some time thinking about four different settings for our stories and sketched those in our journals as well.

In a group, we talked about courage: what it means, how we show it and we read a legend explaining why the bear represents courage in the Seven Sacred Teachings. We then documented our learning in our visual journal.

On computers this week, we logged into Raz-Kids (soveracker0) to read and some of us found a current event that interested us and responded to the 5w’s. We also explored a website with the four global countries we are studying this year with the intention of selecting our top three choices for our country study. We also looked at Google Slides and created a test project for us to practice skills such as: creating a new presentation, adding titles and subtitles, adding new slides to a presentation and inserting a picture onto a slide. Finally, we had some time this week to use the website to find key demographic information on the country we picked and put that information into a Google Slide.

We have been testing a variety of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in our science labs. We have been examining features such as color, lustre (how shiny a rock is), identifying whether it reacts with vinegar and using a variety or scratch tests to determine the overall hardness of the different rocks. We also spent some time identifying important facts about rocks in our book look center.

We had power hour and library this week J

In math, we looked at ways we can represent different numbers. We started with the number 10 and after a group discussion moved on to representing 100. As a class, we looked at a variety of strategies which included base-ten blocks, standard and written form, using number sentences, number lines, skip counting and using a place value chart. We also had a challenge problem that asked us to think of possible solutions to an open-ended question about wheels.

We had art with Ms. Ferrari J Ask me about my time with her!

Finally, we had some time to finish creating our characters with tapigami and some of us even created a pet for our character!
