Week of Jan 8th-11th

Welcome back Grade 3 students! It was so nice to see the excitement as everyone ran into the school on Tuesday morning :) I am so happy to hear that everyone had such an amazing break with your families and friends.

We started the week with a nice morning circle to allow everyone a chance to share a few things about their breaks. We also welcomed a new student, Emmanuel, to our classroom this week. I was proud of the leaders in our room who stepped up and showed him around and played with him at recess (there was no shortage of students who were interested in helping- we have such a kind and compassionate group this year :) ).

In math this week, we reviewed addition and subtraction with regrouping and talked about why we might need to use these concepts in the real world. We started a budgeting project where the students have been given $1000 to design a dream bedroom from Ikea. They have to select an item from a number of different categories (bed frames, mattresses, textiles etc.), sketch and label the items with the cost of the item and then create a running total of the money they have spent. Their goal is to get as close to $1000 as possible.

In science, we started looking at animal life cycles. We talked about complete metamorphosis and incomplete metamorphosis as we looked at the life cycle of butterflies (and other winged insects) as well as grasshoppers and frogs.

This work tied into our social studies as we have begun to look at the various animal species in the global country that we selected earlier in the year. We have used the website Animalia to begin our research as we explore some of those animals. Currently we are working on selecting 3-5 animals that interest us and we will pick one of those animals to do further research on.

Which will tie into our upcoming work on a Pourquoi Tale and art project that we will complete based on the animal we have chosen.

In PE, we started gymnastics with mat work :)

We have also had a couple of "Just Write" blocks as well as played some math games.

We ended our week with a special guest reading with Mr. McMann, who is our Area Principal (which means he is Ms. Bezugley's boss) but he was also once Ms. Parent's boss when he was an Assistant Principal at Hull School! Fun connection :)

We watched a bit of Wonder too!

It has been a productive and fun first week back.
