Highlights from the classroom:

We got our penpal letters back from our buddy class at Niitisipi Learning Centre! We have read the letters and will be writing back next week :)

We wrapped up our subtraction unit in mathematics and we have introduced multiplication. We had a circle and realized that we knew:
- it is related to addition and is the opposite of division
- that it is repeated addition
- multiplication is represented by an x
- it is like skip counting
- anything multiplied by 1 is the other factor
- anything multiplied by 0 is 0
- any single digit multiplied by 11 becomes a double of the single factor

We expanded on our circle discussion to include
- multiplication can be represented by more than an x (with both brackets and a dot) as an x will mean an unknown number/variable as they grow in math
- we then talked about how numbers can be represented by any shape or symbol (it was a fun conversation that included cupcakes and bananas haha)
- we talked about the x (or any representation for multiplication) means "groups of" and the equal sign means the same as. Therefore, 6x5=30 . means 6 groups of 5 is the same as 30.
- we talked about a magic trick for the 9 times tables
- we talked about the importance of decomposing or breaking numbers down instead of simply memorizing
- we looked at groups of in pictures, how to count off groups and talked about arrays

We also played a roll and multiply game as well as a multiplication boxes game.

In health we have been talking about friendship and empathy this week. We read a story and talked about what empathy is and read some scenarios and had discussions in small groups about how we would react to those situations. Last week we talked about different emotions, how we show them and how we can react in a way that helps us grow and build positive relationships.

We have also been exploring some different cooperative games and team building activities! We learned to work together to build a cup tower while not touching the cups with our hands and we worked to save a gummy worm named Fred.

We had our first two meetings with Elder Shirley this week! We explored hoop dancing in our first meeting and looked at the history of the buffalo in our second class. We love Elder Shirley!

In science, we have continued our research on our animals from our global country and most of us are just finishing up! We started our brainstorming from the characteristics of our animals to start thinking about what our question could be in our Tinga Tinga tale. We watched two more this week, How the Cricket Got It's Chirp and How the Eagle Became King of the Sky.
We have also started our Hearing and Sound unit :) We had a discussion about what we already know about hearing and sound and listened to different sounds that were either pleasant or unpleasant. Ms. Manwarren came in to watch Ms. G teach this last lesson!

Ms Parent found Dream Catcher so we finished reading it this week! We have finished up our adventure maps and will move back to Harry Potter next week :)

In social studies we have begun looking at famous landmarks and the landscapes that are found in our global country. We have explored Google Maps as a way to explore the countries and created an adventure map to illustrate some of the things we found. Additionally, we are researching the land through our social website. We are also explore another journaling/sketching technique called the 30-1-3 where we sketch the same object/image for 30 seconds, one minute and three minutes. We started in Peru and sketched Machu Picchu and some llamas. Next up we will be looking at the Thar Desert and Taj Mahal in India. These landscapes and landmarks will tie into our fairy tales that we will be writing with Ms Cathy Beverage next week!

We had our last power hour this week and in PE we have also been playing badminton (in addition to dancing)!

In our literacy circles, we have continued with our novel studies and our work connected with our books. Our Fantastic Mr. Fox group is currently creating board games related to their novel and our Bridge to Terabithia group is finishing up their book and creating a movie poster and writing a review.

We had another art session with Ms. Ferrari where we used the paper we made to create the face of our animals- some of us started to draw and paint our noses as well.

Ms. Lauf came in and taught us a new art technique called zooming in while Ms. Parent went to Ms. Lauf's class to teach them the math game we learned called exploding cauldrons.

We FINALLY filled our marble jar which means we will be having our CLASS PARTY next Friday :) YAY!!
- Ms. Parent will be ordering pizza and bringing in drinks
- We can bring in an electronic and/or a toy or game to play! (The only rule is that all electronic games have to follow the rules on the game...so no games that wouldn't be appropriate for their age group)
- We can wear pjs or a costume
- Ms. Parent will show a movie (if students finish the novel) and a letter will go home to share details about this
- We will be having a FUN morning of earned time!
