Alien Inline Skating

Our students are taking part in inline skating lessons with Alien Inline.  The program will be held in the gym over a two-week period (April 29th – May 2nd, 2019) with each class participating in three- four, 50-minute lessons.

Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets and pads (knee, wrist, elbow) from home.  Please ensure your child’s name is clearly labeled on each of these items.  Alien Inline will provide helmets, disposable liners, and pads for those students who do not bring in their own.

Skates will also be provided for all students.  Students will not be allowed to use their own skates.

As the weather gets warmer, students may be inclined to wear sandals/crocs to school, however, it is imperative that students have socks each day to wear in the rollerblades.

Participation in the program is strongly encouraged as inline skating is an approved activity in the physical education curriculum and is an activity that students really enjoy. In order for your child to participate, the “Acknowledgement of Risk” form needs to be completed and returned BEFORE their skating times. Forms are available on the Prince of Wales website.

A special thank you to Parent Council for covering the cost of this program for all students in the school.  There are no extra charges.

Please review the Acknowledgement of Risk form attached to this form and send it back to school by Thursday, April 18, 2019.

If you are available to volunteer, please email your child’s teacher.

Please see your child’s teacher’s blog for specific days and times.

We will be at the Calgary Zoo on Tuesday (April 23rd) and again on Monday (April 29th)! Here are some quick reminders:
* Dress for the weather and ensure you have shoes (and socks!) that you are comfortable walking in for the day.
* Make sure you bring your lunch, water bottle and maybe an extra couple of snacks
* A backpack will be a handy tool for the day as students will have to carry lunches and visual journals.
* The bus leaves at 830am- we can not hold the bus for late students as they have other routes they must get to as well.
* A detailed itinerary will be emailed to our parent volunteers by tomorrow (Monday, April 22nd).

Here are some of the things we have been up to over the past two weeks (sorry, our last week blog was lost in translation!)

Concert practice! As our concert date approached, the grade 3s were amazing at being flexible and ensuring they put in 100% effort for extra practices both in the classroom and with extra music times. We also created art work (flowers and kites) to be used in the production.

Journaling:
To begin our week after spring break, we completed a fiction/non-fiction adventure map to share some things we did (or would have liked to have done) during our spring break.

We have been reading and documenting our summary of Harry Potter in our adventure maps! We have also been looking at new/interesting vocabulary, identifying problems and solutions, documenting the different settings and creating detailed information sections on the characters in the story.

In getting ready for our mini Zoo School we have been practicing some different journal techniques including gesture sketching and zooming in. Additionally, we have talked about what an ethogram is (tracking animal behavior when they are solitary, social and during feeding times) and created a legend to use when tracking both an animal of our choice as well as one we have selected to complete further research on, in relation to their enclosure and conservation efforts.

In Science/Social, we have been continuing with our hearing and sound unit. We have been looking at a variety of instruments from the 4 global countries and have documented some of our observations in our visual journals. We looked at some different music videos from each country and created see/think/wonder/sketch and color/symbol/image pages to share what we noticed. We also selected a well known instrument from our country of study and have created our own version of that instrument.

We have also been leading some work for the school to honor our work with Elder Shirley. Each of us have selected a partner and a style of Powwow dance to share with the school. We are currently researching and taking notes that we will use to create Google Slides that will be shared in our curiosity case and bulletin board. We started our research by coming up with a definition on what we think powwow dancing is, what a powwow is and to look at what is regalia.

In ELA, we have finally finished our first drafts of our fairy tales that we started with Ms. Cathy Beverage. We will get our feedback and first drafts back this week to begin our work on the final drafts. We also finished our pen-pal letters and have sent them to our friends at Niitsitapi Learning Centre.

In math, we started on the online challenge for grades 1-4 on a program called 10monkeys. We get to practice our multiplication skills as well as to explore other concepts in geometry, telling time, patterns, addition and subtraction. In our multiplication unit, we looked at multiples as an additional strategy for solving the product of two numbers. We have also continued working in our word problem unit, where we have been practicing highlighting key information, looking for key words and attempting to solve a variety of problems using different operations.

While we were disappointed that we were unable to go to Fish Creek on our intended date due to the weather and appropriate clothing, we participated in an outdoor challenge that still allowed us to explore the outdoors. Our challenge was to explore weather (snowy weather in this case) and as we created different builds, we were asked to try and incorporate a bridge into our projects. It was a LOT of fun :)

On our Fish Creek walk, we participated in a fun scavenger hunt and even found some time to play camouflage! Ask me about some cool things I found! (Including some evidence of beavers!).

I hope everyone has a wonderful LONG weekend! I can't wait to hear all about it on Tuesday.
