WHAT WE Have Been Up To:

Art

We worked with Ms. Ferrari this week to think about 3D shapes, shading and vanishing points. We will continue with this work in our next project with her.

Not a Box

We spent some time this week finishing up our good copies which detailed the process, challenges and successes of our Not a Box projects to be displayed next week. We also had some time to enhance and repair our projects as well. We talked about the importance of plussing the design ideas put forward by other individuals and also talked about what blocking would look like in this case.

Mathematics

In math, we are continuing our study of place value and have tried a game called "What's my Number" to help us practice identifying numbers in each value and to practice reading numbers up to and greater than one million. As we work towards creating our reading nooks, we have also spent some time talking about data, data collection and interpreting data. We spent some time discussing what data is, why it is important, who uses data and how it connects to our projects as well as going into other classes to collect data about student activity. We will continue this work next week as we create bar graphs and double bar graphs to represent the data we have collected and then talk about how we will collect data from the classroom discussions about what they value in a reading nook.

Social Studies

Grade 6 students are working through their study of the Canadian democratic process. Please ensure you read Ms. Warrener's and Ms. Pallesen's blog for updates on grade 6 science and social studies.

Science

In grade 5, we have been continuing our study of the wetlands through our study of living and non-living things. We have looked at the seven factors that must be present in order for something to be classified as living, we have talked about some examples that are tricky to classify as they mimic some of those factors and we have looked at examples of both living and non-living things with a playground walk. Ask me if a fallen leaf or branch would be classified as living or non-living.

Cathy Beverage:

We have been so lucky to have been able to spend a couple of days with Cathy Beverage, a published author this week to begin looking at writing narrative stories. Cathy led us in this work by presenting us with a story beginning and we each had a part to write in the middle and then she finished us off by allowing us to choose one of her endings. We will be working to enhance our writing through peer feedback and the use of sensory/imagery next week.
