Learning Updates for Oct. 21-25

Weekly Highlights:

In math, we have been taking on our design challenge of the reading nooks to talk about data, data collection and how we represent that data. This week we have been focusing on how to represent the data we have collected in our classrooms. This led us into a discussion about: bar graphs and double bar graphs, x and y axis, positive and negative integers as well as giving us an opportunity to graph our individual and some of our collective data. We also had a couple of opportunities to play some math games on prodigy.

We had a couple of just write sessions this week to continue working on our writing stamina. Our focus continues to be around using sensory and imagery into our writing with the support of the resource provided by Cathy Beverage.

In science, we have moved from our conversations and activities looking at living and non-living things (ask me if I know the 7 things needed in order to categorize a living object) and we began to look at animal adaptations in the wetland. We know that adaptations are things that help animals survive in their enviroments. Ask me how long it takes for an animal to develop new adaptations. We moved into some animal research, selecting one animal from the type of wetland we studied. We shared some facts about our animal with the class and now we are moving into a study of food chains and food webs. Ask me if I can share what a food chain is (key word is energy), what they always start with and what happens when one part is removed. Ask me if I can describe the difference between a food chain and a food web.

Here is a link to a video we watched this week in relation to food chains and webs: https://youtu.be/CZhE2p46vJk

Please check Ms. Warrener and Ms. Pallesen’s blog for updates on grade 6 science and social!! Grade 6’s have a science test next Wednesday- Ms. Pallesen has put resources on the blog to support students. https://warrenerpallesen.blogspot.com/

In our sit spots this week, we have been observing how our spots have changed over the past few weeks. Ask me what I noticed about my spot.

We spent some time this week with some time to “Ketchup” on our visual journals, updating our table of content pages and numbering our pages.

We had several art classes this week to create our winter cards for a school fundraiser. Our process started with us looking at lots of different options we could use to inspire the art for our cards. We narrowed those down to three different styles of art and had the freedom to use those as inspiration for our winter cards. If we felt confident, we could also create a different style of art independently.

We feel lucky to have welcomed Ms. Haslock into our space this week. We hope she learns lots from us and that we can learn lots from her!
