Grade 5/6: Missing Mondays! Design Challenge for the Week :)

Hello Grade 5 & 6s!!

We are certainly missing all of you today as we are here in the school without you. We are thinking of each and everyone of you as we spend time cleaning our classrooms and drumming up ideas to stay connected with you and to find ways for you to stay active and engaged at your houses.

In the spirit of Outdoor School, our hope for each of you this week is that you are able to still honor the possibilities of learning in an outdoor setting with your families. We have even created a special challenge for you to take part in with your families this week that we would have been doing together in the wilderness.

Shelter Building:

1)  Gather some basic tools that you might use to build a fort in the snow! Ideas include: plastic containers, shovels, buckets and some warm clothes.

2) As the snow is quite light and fluffy, you will likely need some additionally supports to help you in your build which will mean you might have to build a base out of cardboard in your houses/outside. Gather a couple of big cardboard boxes, some tape and something to sketch your designs (journal, plain paper etc.).

3) In your journals, spend some time in the idea generation phase of your design challenge. Sketch 5-10 different possibilities that you could use in your design. Encourage your parent(s) and siblings to do the same. Meet up together and share your designs. Can you find a couple that you all really like? Is there a way to combine your ideas to create a new and novel design that includes some of everyone's favorite ideas? (Remember- don't look to win the Gollum award here...share and be open to everyone's ideas)

4) Now that you've come up with your design, you can now spend some time creating your base out of cardboard! If you are ready, feel free to take your cardboard out to a cleared space in your yard, on your deck or a space that you have decided on for your fort location :)

5)  Work together to construct your base out of your gathered cardboard. Remember to talk about the roles you might play and ensure you can find ways for everyone to have a meaningful role. If you notice someone doesn't look like they have a job- help them out :) If you are having a problem, sit down and talk about it. Come up with a solution everyone feels happy with.

6) Once your base is complete, you can now use your tools to cover your design in snow. Can you find ways to help the snow stick to the cardboard? Do you have any ideas that you could add color to your projects?

7) When you are done- can you figure out what the length, width and height is of your fort. Can you use non-standard units and then standard units. Can you identify the perimeter of the fort? If it is a rectangle or a square- can you calculate the area and volume?

8) Take a picture and share it with us!! You can email your teachers on Google :)
