Thinking Thursday

Hey kiddos! Welcome to Thinking Thursday!!

We hope you’ve had a great week so far! We’ve loved seeing how much you’ve grown in your writing and
math skills (if you haven’t already, please submit your technology essay in Google Classroom-- we’ve
really been enjoying reading them!).

Today, we will be using those division skills we’ve been practicing to help us solve problems! In problem
solving, when we are deciding how to represent a remainder (as a whole number, a fraction, or a
decimal) we need to consider what makes sense for the situation.

For example, if we are splitting up our class into groups of six, it wouldn’t make sense to divide 0.5 of a
student into each group (it makes much more sense to have one student left over, who then can join a
slightly larger group!). However, if we were dividing $53.00 among five people, we could split it so that
everyone got $10 and 60 cents, as we wouldn’t want to have one person take an extra $3.00 for no
reason!

When solving today’s problems, please keep in mind what would make the most sense for the situation
when deciding how you want to answer! (and remember-- please, please, please, show your thinking,
not just your solution!).

Please go to our Google Classroom for today’s assignment!

One last thing! When learning new concepts, it is best to spend a little time each day (no more than
10 minutes!) just practicing and reviewing those skills (that way, it gets into our long term memories!).
We would like you to spend a bit of time on IXL each day reviewing the skills we have been learning,
just like we would be doing if we were in class! Remember to log-in to your own account so your teacher
can see all your hard work!
