Picture Retakes

Information for picture retakes: The photographers will be at the school next Tuesday for retake day. If you would like your child to have a retake, please return the original photo day proof or write a handwritten note to allow their child to return to the camera.

Learning Updates for Oct. 21-25

Weekly Highlights: In math, we have been taking on our design challenge of the reading nooks to talk about data, data collection and how we represent that data. This week we have been focusing on how to represent the data we have collected in our classrooms. This led us into a discussion about: bar graphs and double bar graphs, x and y axis, positive and negative integers as well as giving us an opportunity to graph our individual and some of our collective data. We also had a couple of opportunities to play some math games on prodigy. We had a couple of just write sessions this week to continue working on our writing stamina. Our focus continues to be around using sensory and imagery into our writing with the support of the resource provided by Cathy Beverage. In science, we have moved from our conversations and activities looking at living and non-living things (ask me if I know the 7 things needed in order to categorize a living object) and we began to

Reminders and Updates

Welcome Ms. Haslock On Wednesday we will be welcoming Ms. Haslock into our classroom from St. Mary's University as she continues on her journey of becoming a teacher in her own classroom one day. We are excited to learn from her and have her as a part of our collaborative learning community!! Reminder: Ms. Parent will be away at a learning series tomorrow and Ms. Temple will be in for the day!

IMPORTANT DATES October 23: Fun Lunch (Pizza Hut) October 24: Halloween Family Dance October 31: Halloween - costumes all day, with a special Halloween challenge in the afternoon WHAT WE Have Been Up To: Art We worked with Ms. Ferrari this week to think about 3D shapes, shading and vanishing points. We will continue with this work in our next project with her. Not a Box We spent some time this week finishing up our good copies which detailed the process, challenges and successes of our Not a Box projects to be displayed next week. We also had some time to enhance and repair our projects as well. We talked about the importance of plussing the design ideas put forward by other individuals and also talked about what blocking would look like in this case.  Mathematics In math, we are continuing our study of place value and have tried a game called "What's my Number" to help us practice identifying numbers in each value and to practice reading numbers

Reminders & Important Dates

Important Dates  October 23: Fun Lunch (Pizza Hut) October 22: Ms. Parent is away at a land based learning series October 24: Halloween Family Dance POWER HOUR FORMS  This is just a gentle reminder that power hour forms are due tomorrow (Friday). HALLOWEEN DANCE  Halloween dance tickets are due on Monday, Oct. 21st! If your son/daughter would like to attend the dance, their forms and money should be handed in at the office by Monday. CATHY BEVERAGE  The grade 5/6 classes have had the privilege of working with Ms. Cathy Beverage this week! We have been exploring the elements of a story, sensory writing and how to effectively plan our stories using DATS. Ask me what our story is about and what ends up happening to Ms. Parent in our story. CEREAL BOXES We will be looking at building prototypes for our upcoming reading nooks design challenge and it would be really helpful if everyone could bring in one cereal box to help us with this part of the challenge.

A Message from Mrs Ferrari Ms Ferrari is looking for the following items: knitting needles embroidery hoops yarn for knitting and weaving scrap fabric small glass jars (yogurt jars, pablum?) Tuesday Update

Congratulations!! The grade 5/6 students should be very proud of the work they put into organizing and preparing for the Orange Shirt Day assembly on Monday. Vaccination Forms If your son/daughter brought home vaccination forms, please ensure they are brought back ASAP. Vaccinations are on October 7th in the morning. Upcoming this week Math: Probability and Statistics Writing: Journaling Strategies, reflections and just write times Science/Social: Wetlands (gr. 5), Trees & Forests (gr. 6), Government (gr. 6) Reading: Novel Study- Number the Stars PE: Basketball Skills/Games Peanut Allergy One of our classes has a severe peanut allergy so we are asking that any snacks students bring to school to share with the class be "nut-free" so that everyone can enjoy them. Please let your son/daughter know to just let the teacher know if they have a peanut treat in their lunch so we can ensure they don't take their lunch into other classrooms.
