Week of Oct. 22nd

Please bring back your field trip forms on Monday! We are headed to the National Music Center on Tuesday. This week was flexible in our classroom as we worked really hard to complete a couple of art projects. We created BEAUTIFUL winter card templates for the fundraiser put on parent council. This project was a multi-step and multi-lesson craft that used different layers and materials to create the final project. We are all so proud of the grade 3 students for working so diligently on the cards. We spent one morning and two afternoons on them- but they were totally worth it :) We also spent a couple of blocks of time collaging our visual journals. We had a couple of requirements: 1) we had to cover the entire journal and have no white spots showing and 2) we had to find the letters of our name in magazines and spell it out on our cover. Week of Oct. 15th

We are completing our visual journal covers on Monday, please send in any old magazines or pictures your son/daughter. Field trip forms have gone home today for the National Music Center. Please fill out the form over the weekend :) Book order forms are due Monday. Oct. 25th is an early dismissal day! No School on Oct. 26th (PD day) Halloween Dance forms and payment are due on Monday (Oct. 22nd) Highlights from our week: We explored some pattern problems and centers this week which included: -The Handshake Problem -The Licorice Problem We played the game Kaboom to practice addition facts and we talked about math vocabulary that included: doubles and algorithms. Week of Oct. 8th

Upcoming: Oct. 16th: Rock Mania (3-4 volunteers needed) (Please pay fees online or send in cash/cheque) Here are some highlights from our week: We talked about story: what a story is, what makes a good story, what we remember about stories from last year etc. and then we wrote a "show what you know about story writing from grade 2" :) We all chose different picture prompts and had a couple of writing periods to plan to write our story. First we created a web to highlight the different elements in our story. Next we had some writing time to create our stories. We had a couple of blocks of catch-up time as many of us had 2-7 entries that were incomplete. As we finish out tasks, we can take our name of the lists :) We started to scrimmage in basketball this week! We had been practicing ball handling, passing and shooting drills and this week we got to put those skills into a game situation. Week of Oct. 1st

Sn-Owtober anyone? It's been another busy week in grade three but we are growing and learning everyday :) We are having a spirit day at PoW on Tuesday! Wear your hats! Silly hats, sports hats, winter hats...anything will do :) As there happens to be a Calgary Flames game on Tuesday- the students thought it would be fun to also wear our jerseys or pjs! Whether you wear a jersey or your pjs- anyone can also bring a stuffie :) Some of the highlights from our week include: We created a watercolor agate painting with Ms. Lauf to connect with our Rocks and Minerals unit! Thank you Ms. Lauf for sharing your gifts with us :) We learned a new card game with Ms. Gray and worked on a triangular math puzzle. We had a successful evacuation when we noticed there was something that didn't smell right in the school. Week of Sept. 24th

So it looks like I drafted this on Thursday but did not post it! Sorry grade 3's!! We had an incredibly busy week in Grade 3 :) We spent a LOT of our time preparing for the Orange Shirt Assembly as well as getting ready for our field trip to the zoo. During our OSD prep- -we thought about what residential school meant to us and we wrote a journal entry in our writing journals. -we had selected a book (Not My Girl) and we practiced reading our parts -we practiced listening to the pronunciation of the First Nation groups from Treaty 7 -we recorded our lines and made videos to share in the assembly -we created hearts to surround the stories about experiences at residential schools and of Indigenous cultures -we talked about the first of the Seven Sacred Teachings: Courage and began our sketch of the animal that represents that teaching -we had students working on lots of catch up work in their visual journals For Zoo prep -we learned two new thinking routines!
