Important Information: Please join us on Wednesday, February 27 to create a sea of   PINK   in support of   Pink   Shirt day.  We encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear   pink   to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying.   Highlights from our week: Last week was a super short week! Mr. Schmidt prepared some fun activities for his day of teaching on Tuesday which included some backwards math, leading some fun games in the PE power hour and helped students make final edits for their presentations in Google Slides. We also had a HUGE grade 3 building challenge where students were asked to create a tower using strips of paper that they turned into hearts. Mr. Schmidt raised the highest amount of money in our class to go towards the library redesign. This week, we started out with welcoming our new guest teacher for the next 10 weeks! Congratulations to Rocky for raising the most amount of money in pledges for our read-a-thon fundraiser! He will be teacher for a day!! Also, congratulations to Ryder on reading the highest number of minutes in our class :) Highlights of what we have been working on: We have been continuing our work in subtraction with regrouping in mathematics. We had a couple of challenge riddles that asked students to solve equations in order to solve the riddles. In ELA we have been working on our stories! We wrote three possible story beginnings, selected one and asked for two stars and a wish from a peer and then reworked our story beginning. These included the characteristics of the animal, to look at the habitat of the animal and to research it's diet (prey) and it's predators.  In math we have been reviewing the rules of subtraction (more on top, no need to stop; more on the floor, go next door & numbers the same, zero is the game) as well as looking at what to do when our neighbors have nothing to give. We spent some time each day this week getting our Harry Potter shapes sketches done and next we will cut them out and get them into our visual journals! Week of Jan 8th-11th

Welcome back Grade 3 students! It was so nice to see the excitement as everyone ran into the school on Tuesday morning :) I am so happy to hear that everyone had such an amazing break with your families and friends. We started the week with a nice morning circle to allow everyone a chance to share a few things about their breaks. We also welcomed a new student, Emmanuel, to our classroom this week. I was proud of the leaders in our room who stepped up and showed him around and played with him at recess (there was no shortage of students who were interested in helping- we have such a kind and compassionate group this year :) ). In math this week, we reviewed addition and subtraction with regrouping and talked about why we might need to use these concepts in the real world. We started a budgeting project where the students have been given $1000 to design a dream bedroom from Ikea. They have to select an item from a number of different categories (bed frames, mattresses, textiles etc....
